Sun Protection Hats Necessity This Summer!

September 28, 2018

Summer is coming around again and already you can feel the strength of the sun. It is only going to get stronger as the height of summer approaches and protecting your face area from the sun is vital. Especially children who just love playing out in the sun and they need every bit of sun protection they can as their skin is so delicate.

Skin cancers and premature aging is prevalent here in Australia given our diminishing ozone layer above us and this leave us exposed to more intense radiation than anywhere else in the world. This also means that we are one of the countries with the highest skin cancer rate in the world along with New Zealand and being sun smart has never been so important to our health.

Protecting your face, neck and ears with a hat is adopting good sun protection habits when out in the sun, especially at the beach or around water. This is because the sun can also be reflected back from both water and the sand which means that you are not only getting UV radiation direct from the sun, but also reflected back at you. Used in conjunction with a high SPF sunscreen, shade and avoiding the sun during its most intense hours, you are giving yourself the best chance of minimising your sun damage risk.

Ensuring children wear a hat is vitally important as not only are you teaching them good sun smart habits, but you are also protecting their delicate skin from sun exposure. The Cancer Council has advised that sun exposure in the younger years can dramatically increase their chances of developing a skin cancer when they are older. Sun protection clothing is also vital when they are out and about.

What are the things to look for in sun protection has, especially for children? The first thing is to look for a sun hat which also has got a UPF rating which is the sun protection rating for it. The higher the UPF rating, the more it will protect. For example, a UPF rating of 50+ will help protect against 98% of the ultraviolet rays – both UVA and UVB. The other thing to be aware of is a wide brim. A wide brim will ensure that there is more shade covering the face area inkling the nose. You also want the neck and the ears to be covered by it too.

A security band which goes under the chin can also be useful as this can help keep the hat in place especially when they are running in and out of the water or it is windy. Look for one which has an adjustable toggle to get the correct fit. Sun protection hats Australia are your best summer accessory for staying safe and sun smart!
