Sun Safe and Happy This Summer

August 30, 2017

The weekend rolls around, a beautiful sunny warm day and you and your family head to the beach. The picnic is packed, the umbrella or shade tent is taken and the children are covered in sunscreen. Do you really need much more sun protection than that?

Actually, the answer is yes.

The sun is so strong that it is so easy to get sun damage from the intense UV radiation. As advised by the Cancer Council Australia, direct sunlight especially on days with a UV index rating of 3 and over can cause sunburn which is linked with skin cancer. And to make it worse, there is current evidence that UV damage caused through sun exposure in childhood can significantly increase the risk of skin cancer later in life (Cancer Council Australia).

Remember that it can take as little as a few minutes for skin to burn and for irreversible damage to be done.

As skin cancer through UV radiation is on the rise, the Cancer Council recommends to slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Different fabrics and colors of clothing provide different levels of UV protection but not all types of clothing offer a high UPF sun protection. Did you know:

  • Tightly woven fabrics made of polyester or nylon are naturally non-absorbent and quick drying without the need for chemical treatments to offer UV protection
  • Wearing long sleeves and pants offer more protection
  • Dry fabric can be more protective than wet fabric
  • A white cotton t-shirt will only offer a UPF rating of around 5 - 7

What are rash guards or swim shirts?

A rash guard or sometimes known as a swim shirt is a light weight garment that is made to offer protection from the sun’s harsh UV rays. Cat&I rash guards are not only rated to offer UPF50+ protection which can block out up to 98% of the sun’s harmful rays, but they are lightweight and comfortable to wear.

Why wear UPF50+ Sun Protective Clothing?

UPF 50+ rash guards or swim shirts do add another protective layer to the already utilized sunscreen and shade tents. Using a rash guard is a really good way to keep the whole family, not just children, safe whilst still enjoying time by the pool or at the beach and you can even swim in them as UPF 50+ sun protection garments are lightweight and dry very quickly.

At Cat&I, we have designed our rash guards to not only protect the whole family with our UPF50+ sun protection rating, but we have designed our range to be functional yet fashionable.
