Sunsafe Kids

Protecting young ones from the sun is so important as they are so vulnerable to the sun and the damage it can do. A fact which is not as widely known as it should be is that getting sun burnt in younger years can drastically increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. Hence, sun protection for our young ones is an absolute must.

Keeping children safe from the sun is not that hard to do provided you have got the right tools at hand. Sunscreen and sun protection clothing (including a hat!) are an absolute must if they are playing outdoors.

  •  Rashies or sun protection tops are becoming more popular as parents are slowly realising the implication of keeping their children sun protected. The new rashie for kids has been reinvented to look great and also more functional than ever before. At Cat&I, we designed our range to have top zips for the boys and a full-length zip for girls which makes them so much easier to put on and then take off (especially when wet).
  •  Shade is a great way to reduce the sun exposure and beach umbrellas or tents can help create a shady environment. Especially at places like the beach or the pool where shade is not as easy to come by.
  •  Knowing to reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours or even more frequently if they are running in and out of the water is a good habit to get into. A lot of sunscreens are water resistant for a particular amount of time and will need to be reapplied.

Instilling this important knowledge early in life can help educate them on protecting themselves as they get older. A really good habit to have!

Most people associate winter with a weak sun and a common misconception is that sun protection is not needed. In fact, you can still get sunburnt in winter and skin cancer is still a risk.
The Cancer Council advises that on days where the UV index is 3 or above, you should definitely wear sun protection. Even if it is cool outside, UV radiation is still a huge risk and most of us are guilty not even thinking of sunscreen or a hat. You don’t actually see or even feel the UV radiation as it is invisible and it can even come through light cloud if the day is cloudy.
