Winter Still Good Time to Wear a Rashie

Winter Still Good Time to Wear a Rashie

Most people associate winter with a weak sun and a common misconception is that sun protection is not needed. In fact, you can still get sunburnt in winter and skin cancer is still a risk.

The Cancer Council advises that on days where the UV index is 3 or above, you should definitely wear sun protection. Even if it is cool outside, UV radiation is still a huge risk and most of us are guilty not even thinking of sunscreen or a hat. You don’t actually see or even feel the UV radiation as it is invisible and it can even come through light cloud if the day is cloudy.

UVA and UVB rays are damaging to our skin and can cause sun burn and as well as put you at risk of skin cancer. Taking measures to protect yourself will out you in a good position to hopefully avoid being one of the 1 in 3 Australians who will be diagnosed with some sort of skin cancer by the age of 70.

So, what can you do to protect yourself even in the winter months? Firstly, pay attention to the forecasted UV index of the day and if it is 3 or above, start thinking of basic sun protection.

At the very least you should wear a good sunscreen and look for an SPF of 30 or above to put on exposed areas such as your face, neck and ears.

Another thing to think about is purpose made sun protection clothing if you are going to be out in the sun and a rashie is a great example of this. For men and water sports such as surfing, a mens rashie is a great idea as this will not only provide sun protection but will also help with warmth and chafing from the board.

Similarly, taking the kids to the beach on a sunny day you may want to think about kids rashies. Even though it may not be the hot summer day, a girls rashie or a boys rashie will help keep your kids safe from any sun damage. Plus, it can keep them warm if there is a bit of a breeze or the sun goes behind a cloud.

These specially made garments are made to be of a high UPF value and if you wear one with a UPF 50+ sun protection rating, then that will help filter out 98% of the UV rays. So, winter is still a time when you can get sunburnt so really good idea to keep an eye on the daily UV index and protect yourself.
